The Darwin Initiative is a UK grant scheme administered by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The objective of the Initiative is

Promoting biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of resources

In September 2004, the Cayman Islands suffered severe environmental damage as a result of hurricane Ivan. The Darwin Initiative project “In Ivan’s Wake” was designed to evaluate the extent of this damage and produce a biodiversity Action Plan, towards ensuring the recovery and future maintenance of the biodiversity of the Cayman Islands.

A significant competent of these Action Plans requires that governmental and non-governmental organizations work together to attain mutual environmental goals. To these ends, the Cayman Islands Darwin Initiative has relied heavily on the expertise and support of a host of local and international organizations and individuals.
