Orchid Society Conservation Programmes
The Cayman Islands Orchid Society is dedicated to the preservation of Cayman’s native orchids, and educating its members and the public on orchid conservation and orchid culture. The Cayman Islands support several endemic and critically endangered species of orchids, targeted for special conservation measures detailed in Species Action Plans.
Orchid Society members regularly undertake orchid rescues - removing specimens from land slated for development. Volunteers also form a dedicated Conservation Propagation Team, propagating the seeds of native orchids in a facility based at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park.
A Shade House for the Orchid Society was constructed as a Darwin Partners project in 2007. Specially designed to house rescued specimens, and support the growing-on of propagated orchids, the Shade House was made possible by a generous donation from Coutts (Cayman) Ltd., with the support of Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park and the Cayman Islands Department of Environment, and the hard-working construction services of Orchid Society volunteers.
